Kangxi period
Height: 9I in, 24.1 cm

seated on rockwork with his right hand resting on his knee. He wears well-modelled robes and chainmail over trousers tied above his ankles, a cowl and a shawl; his feet are bare. His features bear a serene expression. A snake and a tortoise emerge from the rocks. The whole is covered with an ivory-tinged glaze.

Zhenwu is a god in the Daoist pantheon and was worshipped as the Supreme Emperor of the Dark Heaven. Mount Wudang in Hubei province is sacred to him. For an essay on Zhenwu, see Little, Taoism and the Arts of China, pp. 291-2.

This subject is more commonly seen in bronze or biscuit porcelain. For a similar example, see Donnelly, Blanc de Chine, pl. 101A.
