An unusual lacquer panel
17th century
Height: 34 1/4 in, 87 cm

depicting a qilin, boldly painted in black and gold on a red ground. The two-horned beast is finely detailed with an open mouth revealing its teeth, a broad nose, long whiskers, bulbous eyes, a curling mane, a scaly body with a ribbed chest and flaming haunches, cloven hooves and a curling tail.

A very fine lacquered wood figure of Buddha
Yuan dynasty
Height: 11 in, 28 cm

seated in padmasana with his hands in dhyanamudra. His face is sensitively carved with downcast eyes and a benevolent expression to his features; his hair is in tight curls and bears traces of blue pigment. Buddha wears a robe gracefully draped around his shoulders and over a dhoti, leaving his chest bare. The dark red lacquer bears extensive traces of gilding.

A pair of cinnabar lacquer panels
18th century
Height of panels: 8 1/2 in, 21.5 cm

one is carved with a scene of scholars in a boat on a river, with tall rocks in which grow wutong and pine trees, and the other with a scholar in a pavilion watching other scholars playing a drinking game sitting next to a stream, on which float cups, in a rocky landscape with wutong trees, pine and bamboo. Both panels are crisply carved with floral diaper borders and are mounted in hardwood frames.

A fine circular cinnabar lacquer box and cover
Ming dynasty, late 16th/early 17th century
Diameter: 3 in, 7.6 cm

the cover is carved with three scholars sitting on rocks amid grass under a wutong tree, one tugs at his beard, another clutches a fan. The sides are deeply carved with key-fret borders. The inside and base are lacquered black.

A rare cinnabar lacquer vase
18th century
Height: 14 in, 35.5 cm

of double-gourd form supported on a spreading foot and terminating in a waisted neck. Each bulb is decorated with four medallions surrounded by ruyi lappets and containing the characters da and ji (highly auspicious) in yellow lacquer against a floral diaper ground, all reserved against scrolling lotus between lotus panel and pendent leaf borders.

A pair of fine lacquered armchairs
18th century
Height: 43 in, 109 cm

each with a scrolling splat supported by a hump-backed top rail, with openwork geometric scrolling dragons either side of the splat and to the aprons, and with further geometric scrolls flanking the central supports of the arms. The stretchers ascend in height from the foot-rail.

An ivory plaque
19th century
Height: 10 1/4 in, 26 cm

the curved back is plain and the interior is finely carved with a landscape of a lake, mountains and trees, with a pavilion perched in the hills; a scholar and his servant cross a bridge, and another scholar sits on a boat with two attendants and a crane perched on the deck.

A fine ivory figure of a luohan
18th/19th centuries
Height: 4 in, 10.2 cm

sitting cross-legged on rockwork. He holds a dog of fo, well carved and incised, which tugs playfully at his earring. The luohan’s face is finely carved with a wry, smiling expression and he wears long robes, falling in many folds, from which his shoes protrude.

with a tier, all decorated with scholars and their attendants among rocks, plants, buildings and roofs.

A lac burgauté table screen
Ming dynasty
Height: 7 7/8 in, 20 cm

decorated to one side with a scene of two scholars and their attendants in a garden beneath a willow tree, with a border of four panels, two of bamboo and two of trees, reserved against a diaper ground. The reverse is decorated with large stems of leafy bamboo. The screen is set within a stand decorated with diaper pattern and leafy floral scrolls.

An unusual stag’s horn water pot
18th century
Length: 2 3/4 in, 7 cm

finely carved with dragons clambering on rocks above churning waves. Two of the dragons are trying to bite each other while a third looks on; they are well detailed with flat muzzles, bulbous eyes, two horns, scaly bodies and bifid tails. The material varies in colour from creamy-beige to dark brown.

A rhinoceros horn libation cup
18th century
Height: 4 1/2 in, 11.4 cm

carved in high and low relief with flowering shrubs and bamboo which appears from behind rockwork. Two flowering trees are carved in openwork and branches appear on the interior mouth. The material is a caramel tone.

A rootwood figure of Shouxing
18th century
Height: 18 1/4 in, 46.3 cm

holding a scroll in his left hand. His head is well carved with a characteristic large cranium and a long incised beard; his features bear a happy expression. He wears long robes and a small cap from which two ribbons fall. The back has a recessed cavity. The figure bears traces of lacquer and pigment.

A good boxwood (huangyangmu) figure of Guanyin
17th/18th centuries
Height: 10 3/4 in, 27.3 cm

seated on rockwork. She holds a child on her right knee; her left foot rests on a lotus flower. Guanyin wears a long scarf over her hair, which is drawn into a topknot, over a robe and dhoti tied at the waist; her bare feet protrude from the hem. Her features bear a serene expression. The child holds a bowl and wears a short jacket over baggy trousers. Lotus pods, leaves and flowers grow from the base.

A parcel-gilt wood figure of Guanyin
18th century
Height: 9 1/2 in, 24.1 cm

holding a scroll, standing on an integral four-footed stand. Guanyin’s head is finely carved with incised upswept hair, fixed with a pin, and a serene expression to her features. The bodhisattva wears a robe and a shawl over a dhoti, from which her bare feet protrude, all falling in elegant folds and slightly windswept. The robes bear extensive traces of gilding. The wood has a fine, mellow patina.

A very fine and rare bamboo root pear-shaped vase (yuhuchunping)
17th century
Height: 8 1/4 in, 21 cm

the well-rounded sides rise from a short, spreading foot, taper to a slender, waisted neck and terminate in a flared mouth. The vase is left completely plain to reveal the beauty of the material, which bears a fine, mellow patina.

17th /18th centuries
Height: 6 1/4 in, 16 cm

finely carved with a continuous scene of a man, with his clothes hitched up, leading a horse through water, with two horses resting on the far bank beneath a large, gnarled pine tree to which one horse is tethered, all well detailed. The material bears a fine, mellow patina. With a hardwood base.

in the form of a dog of fo, finely carved in the round with an open mouth baring its teeth, a bulbous nose, protruding eyes, a finely incised curling mane, a scaly chest, incised hair either side of its ridged backbone, a branched curling tail and well-defined paws. The material bears a fine, mellow polish.

A rare wood figure of a Mandarin
19th century
Height: 17 1/2 in, 44.5 cm

seated on a tiger-skin rug on a chair, his feet rest on a foot-stool. The figure is sensitively and naturalistically carved, his face bears a gentle expression with wrinkles to the forehead and around the eyes and mouth; his hair is tied in a long queue. He wears long robes bearing the square rank badge of a civil official, and a separate hat. The wood retains much
of the original pigments.
