HARDSTONE

108

A soapstone figure of a luohan, seated, his right hand rests on his right knee, and his left, holding a fly-whisk, rests on his raised left knee. His hair is stubbled and his face, with a high forehead, a broad nose and well-defined cheekbones and chin, bears a benevolent expression with his eyes almost closed. He wears a long, flowing cross-over robe decorated with scattered clouds and floral designs and edged with cloud and wave pattern; his left shoe protrudes from the hem. The soapstone is a mottled beige tone with some red and darker markings and slight traces of gilding.
