A very fine rectangular reverse glass painting of a family on a terrace overlooking a lake with trees and buildings in the far distance. The lady and gentleman are seated on a marble-inlaid, cane-seated daybed; he holds a fan in his right hand and the mother looks down on the smaller child, while the second child pours tea. The terrace is furnished with a tall stand and calligraphy above the door to the lake. A maid appears at a large door to one side. Their clothes and jewellery are finely painted and heightened with gilding. In the foreground are two peacocks. Circa 1760-80 |
