| 65 A rare cloisonné enamel shallow dish, the gently rounded sides rising from a flat base, richly enamelled all over. The front is decorated with six scrolling lotus around a stylised lotus pod formed of two lappet bands with six teardrops to the centre, and the reverse with a double vajra medallion surrounded by a further six scrolling lotus, all in lapis lazuli blue, dark green, tomato-red, yellow and white enamels on a turquoise ground; the cloisons and trailing stems bear traces of silver and the lipped rim is heavily gilded. Early 15th century Diameter: 5 3/8, 13.6 cm It is rare for the double-vajra motif to be enamelled, but it can be seen engraved on a gilt-bronze base, see, for example, a similar dish illustrated as no. 14 by Brinker and Lutz in Chinese Cloisonné: The Pierre Uldry Collection; and for a box with a similar central medallion, see Garner, Chinese and Japanese Cloisonné Enamels, pl. 19B. |
