A fine painted pottery camel
Northern Qi or early Tang dynasty
Length: 14 1/2 in, 37 cm

in a recumbent posture with its legs tucked beneath it and its head raised. Its head is well modelled with large, protuberant eyes, flared nostrils and a slightly open mouth. Its head, neck and front haunches are carved to simulate thick fur. Its short tail rests on its hind legs. It has a plain, detachable saddlecloth. The grey pottery bears traces of original pigment.

This dating is consistent with Oxford Authentication’s report C101h99.

A similarly modelled camel is in the collection of the Osaka Municipal Museum of Art. For a related, slightly earlier example, see Ayers, The Mount Trust Collection of Chinese Art, no. 22; and for a Tang camel with a separate rider, see Treasures of Chang’an: Capital of the Silk Road, no. 61, pp. 172-3.
