42 A rare and fine Northern blackware vessel (fanghu) Song, Jin or Yuan dynasty Height: 11 1/2 in, 29 cm of bronze form, the square-section body rises from a spreading foot to a swollen belly and a waisted neck and terminates in a slightly flared rim. The shoulders are moulded with two bold lion masks suspending rings. The vessel is covered with layers of thick, lustrous brownish-black glaze that is a lighter brown to the lower body, masks and rings where it is thinner. The foot rim is unglazed revealing the grey stoneware body. |
