A fine qingbai ewer and cover
Northern Song dynasty
Height: 6 1/2 in, 16.5 cm

the ewer is of globular shape with a slightly recessed base, a waisted neck and an everted rim; it has a curved spout and a double-stranded loop handle. The body is freely incised with stylised floral motifs between bands of horizontal lines at the foot and shoulder. The recessed cover has a rolled rim to fit over the lip of the ewer and a bud-shaped knop raised on a stem; the rim has a small lug. The vessel is covered with a pale blue glaze, pooling in the crevices, which is smeared over the base revealing parts of the white body and spur marks with traces of adherent grit.

For a ewer of very similar shape incised with vines, designated an Important Cultural Property, see The Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, Song Ceramics, no. 46, p. 83, also illustrated in Wirgin, Sung Ceramic Designs, pl. 29j. For another example, see Gyllensvärd, Chinese Gold, Silver and Porcelain: The Kempe Collection, no. 118, p. 111.
