| 68 A fine, large painted enamel dish 18th century Diameter: 21 1/2 in, 54.7 cm decorated in the famille-rose palette with a shaped medallion containing five scholars and two attendants on a garden terrace next to a lake. One scholar plays a qin while two others watch him and two converse. The servants prepare drinks: one fans a large brazier and the other carries a tray of cups. The medallion is reserved against a blue scrolling floral ground, and is surrounded by a wide band of scrolling flowers on a yellow ground and a band of scrolling foliage. The base is painted with a spray of fruits and flowers, above which hovers a bat, and the rim with a band of fruiting vines and camellia, all on a white ground. |
