An unusual painted pottery vessel and cover (ding )

Western Han dynasty

Diameter: 6 3/4 in, 17.1 cm

of bronze form, with a compressed globular body supported on three waisted legs and set with two upright rectangular loop handles. The domed cover has three conical spurs that double as feet when it is inverted.

of rectangular form. Two recumbent mythical beasts, each with pricked ears, heavy brows, bulging eyes, a broad nose, sharp fangs, a beard, a long mane, a ribbed chest, a furry body and clawed feet, support the holder, which has three apertures, on their backs.

with S-shaped sides supported on a straight foot. The exterior and base are covered with a celadon glaze and the sides are painted with four sprays of leafy peaches in underglaze blue and copper-red; the interior is white.
