A fine carved lacquer box and cover

18th century

Length: 3 3/8 in, 8.5 cm

of double-gourd form. Vine leaves, tendrils and flowers, painted in shades of green and red lacquer, decorate the box against a green lacquer ground carved with a dense diaper of wan symbols and rosettes.

A fine carved red lacquer box and cover

Mid Ming dynasty

Diameter: 3 1/4 in, 8.3 cm

of circular form with straight sides. The cover is carved in high relief with a man driving away a lion above rocks and beneath clouds, against a rosette diaper ground.

A rare painted lacquer jardinière

18th century

Length: 15 3/8 in, 39 cm

of double-ingot form, the vessel has S-shaped sides terminating in a flange rim and is supported on six cloud-shaped feet.

Kangxi period

Height of screens: 9 in, 23 cm

of rectangular form and inlaid in motherof- pearl and hardstones: one depicts Zhongli Quan, carrying a fan, and the other Lan Caihe, holding a basket.

one side of the screen is decorated with a scholar, dressed in a long robe and a cloth hat, seated on a stool; his attendant approaches him carrying a bowl.

A rootwood carving of Liuhai

18th–19th centuries

Height: 6 in, 15.2 cm

the plaque is carved with the Immortal carrying his three-legged toad on his shoulder. His face bears a happy expression and he wears flowing robes, utilising the dense, swirling grain of the wood.

An unusual wood group of a tiger

on a rock

18th century

Length: 4 in, 10.2 cm

the tiger lies with its forepaws outstretched, its long tail draped over the rock and its head turned with a fierce expression to its face as if about to attack; its fur is lightly incised to indicate stripes.

A bamboo cup

17th century

Length: 3 5/8 in, 9.2 cm

in the form of a deer in a recumbent posture with its legs tucked beneath it and its head turned over its back; it holds a large spray of lingzhi fungus in its mouth. The deer has short antlers and a prominent spine. The interior is hollowed to form a cup.
