An unusual appliqué picture

Late Qing dynasty

In mount: 38 3/4 x 28 1/2 in, 98.5 x 72.5 cm

depicting an archery contest. An archer on horseback races along a path firing arrows at targets, while his competitors wait to one side, before dignitaries seated around a table in a pavilion festooned with banners; a nobleman kneels on the steps of the pavilion holding a document.

A pair of reverse glass paintings

Mid to late 18th century

11 1/2 x 17 1/2 in, 29.2 x 44.5 cm

one is painted with an elegant young lady seated on a rootwood chair, resting her head onher raised right hand. She wears layered robes tied at the waist with a broad sash. She has an oval face and a rosebud mouth, and her hair is drawn up into a chignon and fixed with gold hairpins in various forms, including a phoenix and flowers.

A reverse glass painting

Late 18th century

19 x 31 1/2 in, 48.2 x 80 cm

a young nobleman sits on a rock on a terrace, with a complex lake scene filled with buildings and pavilions, a bridge and two boats, behind him. He is drinking tea, or wine, poured from a slender ewer by a young maid.

A pair of rare painted votive hanging scrolls

Kangxi period, circa 1700

37 x 68 1/4 in, 94 x 173.3 cm

each is finely painted in ink, colours and gold on silk. Both are inscribed in black ink at the lower right Heshi zhuang qinwang faxin cheng zao (Respectfully commissioned by the Imperial Prince Zhuang), followed by a red seal. The first is inscribed in gold to the upper right Da fan wang zun tian (Venerable Celestial King Brahma, the Hindu deity Mahabrahma).
